Built by instinct.
Worked by hand.
I build large, expressive paintings with oil paint, pigment, charcoal, oil pastels and chalk. Brushes, palette knives, my hands and sometimes a saw shape my work.
Layers are added, scraped back and rebuilt. Each mark responds to what is already there. I continue until the painting has the tension and presence I am looking for.

THE STORY
CHOOSING THE FIRE.
For years, my life was built around responsibility, structure and certainty. Painting began quietly. It gave direction to emotions I had learned to control instead of feel.
In my late forties, I stopped fitting painting around the edges of my life. I dared to let it become the centre. What began as a way to cope slowly became my way to speak.
Call it a midlife crisis if you like. There are worse ways to have one.
