Willem Vos working on a large painting in his studio in Dwingeloo.

Built by instinct.
Worked by hand.

I build large, expressive paintings with oil paint, pigment, charcoal, oil pastels and chalk. Brushes, palette knives, my hands and sometimes a saw shape my work.

Layers are added, scraped back and rebuilt. Each mark responds to what is already there. I continue until the painting has the tension and presence I am looking for.

The Work

The work begins underneath.

Birds, faces, eyes and raw layers return throughout Willem’s paintings. They carry tension, protection, freedom and change.

Never decoration. Never fully explained.
